Expansion of Nephrology Service in Puttalam District with 2 additional kidney dialysis machines.
Sri Lanka has one of the highest rates of Cronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in the world. The reasons are complex but have been linked to the consumption of ground water in arid parts of the country. This is compounded by high rates of hypertension, diabetes, snake bites and infections. Yet, provision for life saving kidney dialysis in the country is woefully inadequate. In the Puttalam District which has a population of 850,000, only 20 dialysis machines are available in 2 centres.
Consultant Nephrologist Dr. Udana Ratnapala and his team are striving to increase capacity to treat more patients by establishing a new dialysis unit at Anawaduwa Base Hospital. A new building to house the unit has been constructed. A long standing Hela Sarana supporter has come forward with funds to supply 1 machine. Another machine is needed to set up the unit.
Hela Sarana charity organisation has decided to take on this project and help to save precious lives. A sum of £9,400 is needed and we are appealing to our generous supporters to make donations in order to complete this project. Every little counts so please give whatever you can.
