Story

US Coast to Coast

I started my fundraising efforts for Irish Dogs for the Disabled in 2017 with my first solo hike of the Arctic Circle Trail in West Greenland and as part of my continued journey to support them, on the 24th of October 2023 I will be beginning my attempt to cross the continental US from its most Easterly point at West Quoddy Lighthouse in Maine finishing at Cape Alva in Washington State, the most Westerly point on foot and by packraft.

This won't be a non-stop trek due to commitments but will take place over 2023 / 2024.

The conditions of the journey is that it be made under human power alone, no motorized transport is allowed.

The trek has been planned in three phases with multiple multiple legs and using the Eastern Greenway Trail, Greater American Rails to Trails Trail and the Snake and Columbia Rivers.

The entire journey will be in the region of 5000 miles / 8000 kilometers.

Phase One:

Maine / New Hampshire / Massachusetts / Rhode Island / Connecticut / New York / Pennsylvania / Maryland...Ending in Washington D.C.

Phase Two:

Maryland / Pennsylvania / Ohio / Indiana / Illinois / Iowa / Nebraska / Wyoming / Montana / Idaho.

Phase Three:

Idaho / Oregon / Washington.

About the charity

Dogs for the Disabled is a National Charity and the only one of its kind in Ireland. Enhancing the quality of lives for children and adults, who have varying degrees of physical disabilities. Our mission is to provide fully trained Assistance Dogs to assist in everyday activities and in doing so improving their quality of life. Our Assistance Dogs are provided free of charge and our charity receives no government funding. 85% of our clients are children between the ages of 6 – 12years living with severe physical disabilities which affect every aspect of their lives from independence to social interaction. Our Assistance Dogs are specially trained to assist in many ways, some of which are opening/closing doors; assist with dressing/undressing; sending of help; retrieve dropped items like keys or telephones; empty the washing machine: fetch the post; switch lights on/off; Press Pedestrian Crossing buttons plus much more….. We are currently running a unique programme designed to assist children with cerebral palsy to walk with our Stability Assistance Dogs. Huge progress has been made in helping these children to walk and increasing the possibilities of keeping them walking as they grow. Dogs for the Disabled funds all its services through the effort of our loyal volunteers across the country. Each Assistance Dog costs the charity €15,000 to produce and provided free of charge to our applicants.
