Story

One More City is an annual cycling campaign that moves from city to city, starting from where the previous year’s ride has finished.

Since 2017, One More City has completed seven rides through six countries, raising nearly £400,000 for secondary breast cancer research in the UK.

It is a privilege to ride with this extraordinary group! Last year I managed to complete the four consecutive days, each over 100 miles, crossing the Alps from Munich to Rome. We put in 11 and 12 hour days, sometimes finishing in the dark. I was only able to manage this because of the support of the amazing ride leaders, the other 36 riders, the other volunteers and those who have been helping me to overcome my chronic fatigue.

I was humbled by the generosity of everyone who donated to my 2023 ride, raising over £5.000. Thank you all! It was a massive motivation as I laboured up the seemingly endless slopes, knowing that I simply had to keep going as I could not let anyone down.

The ethos of One More City is that the journey is never over; we are always progressing towards the next city, there are always more kilometres to do, more climbs to conquer and more challenges to face. This is akin to the reality of anyone living with cancer, especially secondary cancer, for whom the challenge is never over; there are always more treatments to endure, more scans to face, more side effects to manage.

In the autumn we made a direct connection to the OMC cause by visiting the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and meeting the PhD student we are funding. We saw her detailed work at first hand and heard about OMC funded results. These include accelerating the clinical trials of a drug to help some instances of secondary breast cancer.

The OMC funding model is really efficient. The riders meet the full cost of the ride themselves and OMC is entirely volunteer-led. So every penny raised goes to the ICR and the research we are funding.

Here we are in 2024 and I am delighted to be riding again for this amazing cause. We start in Venice and finish in Rome, once again four consecutive 100+ mile days.

We have upped the ambition and are now seeking to fund a fully qualified clinical research doctor as opposed to a PhD student. But I also know that I am doing this for myself too. For this reason once again I have met half of the £1,000 target myself.

If you choose to make a donation, I will be delighted. But please do not feel obliged, just wishing me well will also be great.
