Story
For those of you that don’t know me, I am Mike's Mum, many of you will know that sadly Mike, Mikey to his friends, lost his battle on 6th April 2023 after stoically fighting a rare type of cancer.
Michael's last week was spent in Woking Sam Beare Hospice, where he was treated with so much kindness, love and dignity. I have been thinking that I would like to raise some much needed funds for the hospice but thought a cake sale or coffee morning was just a bit lame, so while perusing SBH website for some much needed inspiration I saw they were holding their annual skydive event on Mike’s (actual) upcoming first anniversary on 6th April, and without hesitation thought…that’s it...I'm going to do a skydive!
It was sign, I’m not sure where from but never the less a sign, I am TERRIFIED of heights so this will be one HUGE challenge for me. It’s something I have vaguely thought about for many years I could do, but in all honesty I don’t think I would ever of got round to actually doing one…but I’m doing this for Mike, and I know if he was here with us still, he would be telling me ‘do it Mum, look on it as an adventure’! I know on the day Mike will be with me and more than likely giving me that encouraging shove out the plane!
Michael was a beautiful person, both inside and out, although his time on earth was cut tragically short, he managed to live a very active and varied life, from being in the Great Britain Ski Team, to achieving his dream job working on the Asian market, to finally upping sticks and moving 6000 miles east to live and and work in Hong Kong.
Sam Beare Hospice is a wonderful place, they allowed all six of us, Emma, Brian, myself, Nicky and Chris, and Laura, to stay with Mike the whole time 24/7 and welcomed Oscar 🐾 too. They are still supporting us as a family through this difficult time.
As a family, we are all extremely proud of Mike's achievements and I know he would be equally proud of me taking on this huge challenge! 🤍
Excerpt from Sam Beare Hospice
‘Here at the hospice, we rely on the compassion and generosity of caring people like you to enable us to provide specialist palliative support at no cost to our patients or their families. Only a small percentage of our funding comes from the government, and therefore we rely heavily on voluntary income to raise the £9 million needed to provide our services’.
