Story
Our event will feature a 23km endurance challenge through the picturesque Surrey Hills, aiming to raise substantial funds for Alzheimer’s research and support services.
Dementia is a defining health and social care challenge:
• It costs the UK economy over £42 billion per year, projected to rise to £90 billion by 2040.
• Alzheimer’s Society research indicates that 982,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia, expected to increase to 1.4 million by 2040.
• In 2022, dementia (the majority of which was Alzheimer’s disease) was a leading cause of death in England & Wales, accounting for 20.7% of all deaths.
• There are 700,000 people in the UK caring for loved ones with dementia, with 2 in 5 providing over 100 hours of care weekly.
• Only 2 in 3 people with dementia in the UK have received a diagnosis.
• By 2026, an estimated 50,000 people with dementia will be from ethnic minority backgrounds.
• Women are disproportionately affected, making up two-thirds of those with dementia, and the majority of carers, impacting their careers significantly.
Despite its impact, dementia research receives less support compared to other health conditions:
• There is only one dementia researcher for every four cancer researchers.
• People living with dementia often face challenges in diagnosis, accessing treatments, and receiving adequate care.
Research is the key to unlocking solutions to these problems, and your support is vital.
