Story
It's time for my 2023 birthday challenge, and this may be the biggest one yet!
The next edition of the tradition I wish I'd never started is a big walk. I'm going to 'connect the dots' and go 'shop to shop' between Secret World Wildlife Rescue's 3 charity shops.
Starting at Langport, I'll walk to Glastonbury (just under 12 miles), have a bit of a rest, then carry on to the Burnham-on-Sea shop via SWWR's centre (just over 17 miles.)
That's close to 29 miles in one day! I'm aiming to be done in 12 hours.
On 20th May 2022, I rescued a pigeon with a broken wing from someone's garden. It was badly injured, so SWWR ended its suffering. This was one of 20 animals admitted that day, and between May and July, the charity sees this many new animals every day. Hopefully I can help some more animals this year!
Anyone who knows me will know that I hate exercise and have never trained for anything in my life. I don't mind a bit of walking, but this will be the longest distance I've walked by a long stretch. It's going to be a big challenge and I’m sure I’ll be feeling sore and tired, but the discomfort will be nothing compared with what so many wild animals have to endure.
I'll be posting updates, and hopefully details of a mini event at Glastonbury to coincide with my break there. I also plan to have a live tracker via Strava on the day; I'll post the link here once that's online.
I'd really appreciate it if you're able to spare a few quid and help me hit my target. My initial target was a modest £500 as I know things are tough for everyone this year. However, after an amazing and humbling response, I’m going for an ambitious £2,000! As well helping give sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife a second chance at life, you'll be fuelling my tired legs and brain for their 60,000+ steps on the day.
