With time and nervousness to kill before a dentist's appointment, I entered the local library and, thumbing through the "Community file", discovered "Youth Befriending". In no time, I've completed the course, been CR checked and excitedly await my new friend match. In the meantime, i fervently hope you choose to put your shoulder to their wheel with a donation for which i will reward you with 82 miles of blood, sweat and fears.

"Space for Youth Befriending" provides young people aged five to 16, living citywide in Edinburgh, with a volunteer befriender who, once a week for several hours, supports and encourages them to explore new activities and find fresh interests and hobbies.

Befriending partner matches are based on shared interests and are entirely child-led; the volunteer helps their young friend build confidence and self-esteem, improve social skills, and make friends outwith their peer group through an individual programme.

Befriending can make a real difference to a young person’s life, helping them access opportunities they might otherwise have missed.

For more than 30 years, Space @ The Broomhouse Hub has worked to build a better future for the people of Broomhouse, Parkhead, and Sighthill—as well as the wider South West Edinburgh area.

At Space, all money raised goes directly to The Broomhouse Hub to fund the vital work we do for our community.

We are extremely grateful for any contributions. Every donation makes a real difference to the lives of disadvantaged young people and vulnerable adults:

• £5 buys a meal for a hungry child

• £10 supports a visit to The Beacon Club for an older person with dementia

• £20 covers the cost of a befriending visit, providing support for a child affected by parental addiction.

Thank you in advance for your support. By choosing to make a donation, you'll be making a real difference to the lives of folks across Edinburgh.

(Don’t forget to claim Gift Aid, which guarantees Space an additional 25% of your donation, at no cost to yourself.)
