Story

Over the last few summers, wedding season has allowed me to reconnect with friends (pic in gallery) I haven’t seen or spoken to in years. It has been great to reconnect, and naturally fit back into our old ways. One such friend is Matt, who has not only had the ‘pleasure’ of my company, he’s also had to keep close tabs on his older brothers antics. Fortunately for Matt he managed to avoid the ‘golfing’ stag in Lisbon….

In May 2022, aged 31, Matt was diagnosed with an incurable Grade IV Astrocytoma Tumour (A type of Brain Cancer). Following diagnosis, he was treated through an awake craniotomy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy - with chemo finishing up in July 2023.

Following these treatments, the remainder of the tumour is currently 'stable', and Matt is now undertaking quarterly MRIs / reviews to monitor the tumour. However, as previously mentioned, this tumour is incurable and based on existing data, it is highly likely that he will have to pursue further treatment in the next few years.

Despite this, Matt ran the London Marathon in 2024 raising over £20,000 and completing the run in 4 hours (what an achievement). For those that know Matt, this great achievement was not solely for his benefit but for the many others who may have to fight this battle. However, what it does show Is how courageous and determined he is and always has been. Not to mention the positive outlook Matt has adopted from the outset, which is a pleasure to be around.

Naturally, I wanted to help, and whilst lacking the medical expertise I do have the ability to run and in doing so raising awareness for Brain Tumour Research. After being on the waiting list for the London Marathon in 2024, I managed to secure a place for 2025. The base level training has already started with a recent half marathon under my belt, and plans for future races as I build up to race day. My goal is to raise as much awareness as possible, which in turn will hopefully lead to raising vital funds for the charity. I’m also going to pushing my body to its capabilities in trying to secure a sub 3 hour marathon.

Charlotte will also be running Lake Garda Marathon at the start of April, and we thought it was a great opportunity to combine our fundraising events.
