Hi lads I’m back again for another challenge for charity and of course Christy wouldn’t let me do it by myself.
Some of ye might know that this year had been a really tough one for me. I lost my Dad very suddenly to cancer and my Mam is battling cancer for the second time in 5 years. So as it has basically touched everyone in some way so I wanted to raise money for it.
As tough as it has been this year I want to end it with something positive.
I’ve always wanted to do the London marathon since starting running and was planning on trying to get a spot this year but unfortunately when the ballot was open my dad was sick and passed so it slipped my mind and the time closed. Now with such an uptake in running recently you’re looking at about 8 to 10 years to get an entry anyway. So I decided to go for a charity ballot. Where if you’re successful they will give you a spot in return they ask you to try raise some money for the charity. The only charity I applied for is The World Cancer Research fund. They have been a great help to me and showing me all the work they do. I was lucky enough to get a charity spot for next year.
So we are planning on running 100 kilometres around youghal on the 14 of December to raise some money. My goal is €4000. Now we DONT want to do this on our own we want as many people possible to run with us. Don’t worry you don’t have to do 100k. We will be doing loops of 18k but we will be passing town every 5 to 8k so you can jump in and head off as you please. The Waterford half marathon Is close to the time and I know some people are doing that so what’s one more run before eating and drinking our own body weight at Christmas. The pace will be SLOW so don’t worry.
Just a few stats about cancer. 42,000 people in Ireland will be told “you have cancer” each year. But would you believe 40% of these are preventable. So 16,800 people could have avoided that through exercise, diet and overall lifestyle. If you want more information about preventing this awful disease look at world cancer research funds website.
The only thing I would say if you feel like something is off or you have a lump or a mole get it checked. Even if you’re told everything is fine but you still don’t feel confident get a second opinion. It’s your health and your body so you know better than anyone else.
The link is on the Instagram page if anyone wants to donate. If any businesses in youghal want to help out give me a shout.
Sorry for the long message but thanks for taking the time to read it.
See ye in December
David
