Story
By 2025, over one million people across the UK are expected to be living with dementia, and whilst this heart-breaking condition has no cure, support is available through Dementia UK’s specialist Admiral Nurses, who work directly with families affected by all forms of dementia, every single day.
Fundraising really is the lifeblood of so many charities, and every few years I like to play my part in trying to make a difference. This May, I’m going to be joining a group of colleagues, on a five-day cycle expedition across Italy, taking in over 360km of cross-country terrain, from Rimini to Pisa. I’m not a natural cyclist and training will be required - I’m up for it and it has started, but I still know this will challenge me beyond limits and my 20 years seniority on the other teammates will certainly show…
From a personal perspective, myself and my three brothers sadly watched and helped nurse my mother, witnessing her downturn over two years, from a strong, alert and happy individual to, well we all know someone who has been on this journey and what the end looks like. It’s tragic and very sad.
We were not lucky enough to have an Admiral nurse, but we did have wonderful carers. Over the coming years, the demand for these nurses will rise exponentially and charities like Dementia UK are pivotal to providing them. To be able to do this they desperately need funds and I hope that with your help we are able to provide the charity with what they need to help make a difference – no matter how big or small.
