Cure4George supports Duchenne UK a charity that has one clear aim to end Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).
On the 24th of March I will be running the Brentwood Half marathon to raise funds for Duchenne UK
Duchenne UK is a charity extremely close to my families hearts as George (aged 15), one of my 3 younger brothers was diagnosed with a muscle wasting condition called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), in 2016 at the age of 8.
George uses a power wheelchair full time and has recently started a trial with GOSH to try and slow the conditions progression and extend his life expectancy, but there is currently no cure for DMD. George is an inspiration to us all and has done so much to raise awareness and trying to improve the lives of disabled people with accessibility to sports, with George enjoying playing powerchair football on the weekends.
DMD is a genetic muscle wasting disease with no cure and 100% fatal. It is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting 1 in every 3,500 boys born (around 2500 people have DMD in the UK), which results in progressive loss of strength and is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes dystrophin. Their muscles gradually get weaker, which starts in their legs and progresses to the upper bodies, and eventually the heart and lungs. They are expected to be in a wheelchair full time by the age of 12, with life expectancy of mid to late twenties.
Thank you so much for any donation you can make.
