Story

Hello and welcome to my fundraising page!

On Sunday the 17th of November 2024, I will be running the Alton Towers Half Marathon for East Kent Hospitals Charity. This will be the first of my fundraising attempts for the charity.

Therefore this fundraising page is to raise funds for Thomas Becket Dialysis Unit, in memory of my Dad John Moles. EKHC is the NHS charity that raises funds for the wards and services provided by the NHS.

Those of you that know me well, will know that I sadly lost my Dad on the 31st of May 2024, due to having a long battle with diabetes and diabetic kidney disease. Dad was a regular and well-remembered patient at The Thomas Beckett Renal Unit and for the past four years would attend three times a week for treatment. Dialysis was tough, he was increasingly exhausted after his treatment, and spent much time recovering from each session. Dad's mobility also deteriorated very quickly meaning he was not able to get out of the Hospital Ward as often as he would have liked. Despite this, he continued to enjoy time with his family and would often go into the Hospital garden with his wife Racheal and sit on the bench and have conversations with other patients and their relatives.

Despite kidney disease affecting 1 in 10 people worldwide, there is still not enough awareness about the condition. Sadly, many people don’t realise how important their kidneys are until they stop working properly."

The following are examples of how a donation can make a direct impact in order to provide specialist equipment at the cutting edge of technology, improve treatment facilities, support staff development and create a healing environment to promote well being within clinical spaces, to name a few.

The marathon poses a new challenge for me. This isn't just a case of getting across the finish line. I will be targeting a certain time (guesses welcome!) which will require some serious training and dedication. This will be a chip timed run, which will see me complete the 13.1 miles (21 Kilometres), around Britain's largest theme park. Updates of my training and races can be found on this page and my data recorded on STRAVA.

Thank you for your generosity.
