The Bloor’s story
Myself, my wife Charlotte and my Mum Sally are trekking Snowdon at night in memory of my Dad Shane. The care and compassion the East Cheshire Hospice nurses showed my Dad in his last few days are why we are going out of our comfort zone and trekking a mountain so that they can continue to provide dedicated care and support to other families.
Shane had been unwell for the past few years after being in remission for prostate cancer since 2015. Shane's health started to deteriorate rapidly in December 2023. Following a scan he was found to have a tumour and on 27th December he was again diagnosed with Cancer.
The following January he was admitted to hospital with Sepsis due to an abscess which was caused by the cancer. He was treated with IV antibiotics and had undergone biopsies to identify what type of cancer he had. He was discharged from hospital a week later and when at home on 5th February received his diagnoses of Squamous Cell Carcinoma in all cores. (This is believed to have started in his prostate and spread throughout his pelvic area and into his hips.)
Shane was then re-admitted to hospital on 7th February due to the onset of another infection. This time his body was not responding to the IV antibiotics, the doctors decided there was no more treatment they could provide due to him being so unwell. He was given 12-24 hours to live.
Shane's final wish was to return home to be with his family. This was only made possible by the amazing nurses and healthcare assistants at East Cheshire Hospice. Once he returned home on 14th February he brightened up and enjoyed his last few days with his family, Shane sadly passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his close family on 17th February 2024.
