This fundraiser is aimed to protect and sustain the rich culinary culture of earthquake-stricken Southeastern Turkey and Northern Syria and help support small-scale farmers and producers of the region.

The earthquakes of February 2023 have taken the lives of tens of thousands and displaced millions. The devastation is beyond belief. We need to keep doing all we can to provide both immediate and long-term support to the region.

The home of many cultures across millennia, this region is one of the world’s cradles of civilization. With major trading hubs as well as crossroads of arts, sciences, and religions, it has undisputed historical and cultural significance. The culinary heritage is immensely rich and layered, thanks to a wealth of ingredients and a kaleidoscope of peoples.

The region also carries immense importance today in terms of its agricultural output. Entire communities rely on farming and food production for their livelihoods. It is crucial to help them get back on their feet in order to keep production going and prevent involuntary migration.

As part of this initiative, Cemre Torun and Mehmet Gürs are organizing a unique one-day food conference honouring the culinary heritage, the food cultures, and the people of Southeastern Turkey and Northern Syria on June 12th, 2023 at London's Old Billingsgate. CRADLE OF FOOD is a full day of talks, discussions, and immersive food experiences. The conference will feature inspiring talks about the region’s rich culinary culture as well as discussions on the role of food in the rehabilitation and rebuilding of communities. A highlight of the day will be the massive “Collaboration Lunch” featuring the region’s heritage dishes, prepared by leading chefs and culinary icons from the region and beyond.

All proceeds from event ticket sales and additional donations through this appeal will be used to aid small-scale farmers and producers of the region through a collaboration with local humanitarian organizations such as Hayata Destek (Support to Life).
