Story
Cordelia has asked to do a sponsored cycle to fundraise for her baby brother Albert’s specialist neuro rehab therapy. Albert was born with a rare genetic neurological disorder that causes speedbumps for his development and epilepsy, and when he was diagnosed we were told it would be unlikely he would be able to walk, hold his head, sit unaided and have limited ways to interact. When he was six months old he started specialist neuro rehab therapy at Blue Skies Ahead, focusing on creating new neurological pathways in his brain to help him with his movements. Since starting his sessions, Albert has made amazing progress. In his first session he had very little purposeful movement, but now he can now hold his head for up to two minutes at a time, bat toys with his arms, kick his legs, and has even learnt to roll!
They have truly worked wonders, and have also helped to improve his comfort and tone - as this is also affected by his neurological issues. Cordelia loves finally being able to interact more with her brother! However Albert still needs a lot of specialist help to become more mobile and aware of his body and the world, and it’s important to do this early whilst neuroplasticity is at its highest as his brain is still “mouldable”, so this specialist therapy is really important for him - but expensive.
The 5 mile cycle will take place on Saturday 25th August.
All funds raised are managed by the charity Just4Children, who have approved Albert and his therapy as a legitimate cause to receive Gift Aid.
Cordelia says:
“Boys and girls please come and sponsor my bike race so we can raise money for my brother because he is the best brother in the whole entire universe, I will cycle from my house to Sefton Park and back again on my bike which is five miles. I might stop for a little snack in the middle.”
