Story
Human rights are designed to be invisible. We don’t really think about having the freedom to express our own opinions, being able to get a book from the library, or walking outside without a head covering. But for many around the world, these routine freedoms are often threatened.
For people like Layla, rights and freedoms are something which must be fought for. As a documentary filmmaker from Iran, Layla wanted to raise awareness of women’s rights and conditions in Iranian prisons through her films. This open reporting led Layla to be imprisoned for three years in the very same prisons she reported on – cramped, dirty and overcrowded spaces.
Without the support of Prisoners of Conscience (PoC), people like Layla might be unable to re-build their lives and continue fighting for their, and in turn our, human rights. Which is why I am raising money for PoC this April.
As part of the Prisoners of Conscience Appeal Fund's April campaign, I am embarking on a challenge that aims to shed light on the plight of prisoners of conscience. These individuals, who are persecuted for their non-violent acts in defence of human rights, often find themselves trapped in highly difficult and rapidly changing circumstances, cut off from any sources of information.
To experience even a fraction of the uncertainty and anxiety they endure, I will be undertaking a 5-hour meditation in central London. Blindfolded and disconnected from the outside world.
By supporting my endeavour, you can contribute to raising awareness about this pressing issue and providing much-needed assistance to those who have been unjustly silenced. Together, we can make a difference and support these heroes in their ongoing and remarkable work.
Join me on March 22nd, 2024, as we come together to stand in solidarity with those who have sacrificed so much for the betterment of humanity.
