We research early diagnosis and treatments to beat pancreatic cancer.

Story

We are raising money for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund by embarking on a 100km run along the Norfolk Coastal Path on the 16th of June. We'll be finishing on Brancaster Beach, where Mum loved to spend time throughout her life and where she and Dad chose to retire to last summer.

Mum was diagnosed with stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer on the 14th of November last year. This diagnosis came painfully late and as a result, we had no time to start a fight against this awful disease. Sadly, this is too often the case when it comes to Pancreatic Cancer because it is rarely symptomatic before it is too late. Of all the cancers, it is one of the worst in a number of ways: prognosis, pain and the statistics have hardly improved whilst the battles against most other cancers have become more and more hopeful. Our story is one of many. The charity we have chosen is doing immense work in attempting to turn the tide on this. Our wish is that no other family has to go through what we went through - that at least they have more time and hope than we were afforded, even if the same ultimate fate cannot be avoided.

Mum passed away just 5 weeks after her diagnosis, on the 21st of December. It's still nearly impossible to describe how those weeks and the months since have felt. Mum was a truly special person, with a heart of gold and total dedication to others throughout her life. We want to honour her and let her live on through us by continuing her efforts in looking after those around us, and beyond.

While we're all relatively athletic, none of us are ultra-runners, with our furthest distances ranging from 10km to one marathon. It's been a gruelling training process, with injuries and setbacks (we have torn; muscles, IT bands and even a meniscus), but we're determined to push through and make it to the finish line.

We know it won't be easy - we're expecting 15-20 hours of plodding through heat and injuries. But we won't give up, we're committed to this cause and would be grateful for your support. We’re under no illusions as to how this endeavour is in some ways self-serving, frankly, the structure this running has given us over the past 6 months has been invaluable for our mental health. That said we hope the challenge is suitably gruelling and the cause worthy enough that you be willing to offer some generous support here, and maybe in person too.

Thank you and see you on Brancaster Beach

P.S. If you are interested in running with us for a portion of the distance, or in helping as part of the support crew, please get in touch with Ricc, Cos or Teo directly!

RCN 1155322
Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund is the only national charity dedicated solely to beating pancreatic cancer through research. Survival rates are low, so new research is vital. In the past, this cancer received little attention. With your help, we can change this so more people beat pancreatic cancer.
