Story

Thank you very much for visiting this page.

Cambridge Clubbercise Fitness Instructors are hosting a very special Clubbercise Marathon (Clubbathon) and this year we are raising money for the British Heart Foundation. We'd be so grateful for your support. The BHF has helped halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK but sadly every day hundreds of people lose their lives. It's only thanks to support from people like us that the BHF can create new treatments and discover new cures. £24 could pay for two hours of research by an early career scientist, but every pound helps so if you can, please do help us hit our target. Many Thanks!

On the afternoon of Sunday 16th July 2023 at the Cambridge Junction, clubbers will be on the club dance floor for 4 hours of dance exercise to music, challenging themselves and doing it ALL for the BHF.

WHY THIS CHARITY? This year our Clubbathon event is for a very heartfelt and special reason. Not only are we raising important funds for the charity itself, but this event is being provided for EVERYONE who would like to join us to be able to do something in memory of loved ones lost. EVERYONE knows someone for which a heart attack has affected lives! This is a very special charity held close in many people’s hearts.

It is my absolute pleasure to share how we have a very special lady who attends classes at Clubbercise with Amelia in Stow Cum Quy and Cherry Hinton in Cambridge. This lady is found at the registration desk (as well as on the dance floor of course) Clubbercise class manager, Jo Barlow is sharing her very personal reason and story for her participation in this event.

Jo had a heart attack herself at the age of 40. Jo survived her heart attack a rare heart attack, SCAD, a Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection. This is when a small tear appears in the wall of a coronary artery, which supplies blood to your heart. SCAD often affects women more often than men and within a much younger age group. After Jo's heart attack she was invited by the British Heart Foundation to visit their headquarters in London to take part in radio interviews and bravely she shared her personal story to help raise awareness and in support of all the amazing research and work that the British Heart Foundation does. After Jo’s heart attack it took much courage and strength for her to get back to her loved dance exercise and she is testament to how you can still exercise and keep fit and healthy after a very challenging and life changing event. And this is why we are providing our event!

Not only this, but Jo's dearly loved mum also had a heart attack during the Covid pandemic and after this, Jo and her mum took part in another brave BBC News interview in support of Papworth Hospital in Cambridge and in helping to make people aware of the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and seeking medical help. The emphasis made to not ignore any heart attack signs or symptoms and crucially at the time, to encourage people to seek medical help even within the pandemic as people were more reluctant to go to hospital or call for an ambulance.

Two years ago in April 2021, Jo's mum Susan, sadly and very unexpectantly passed away and so it is in loving memory of Jo's dear mum and of the very special bond that they both had for each other and on supporting each other through their very difficult times had of their heart attacks, that Jo is sharing her story and to encourage others to come together to support this event and charity.

The British Heart Foundation really does make a difference in people’s lives. This charity operates by not only providing information to people on how to ensure a healthy heart but also the funds and the huge research that goes into finding out more about heart attack risks, prevention and cure within advanced and evolving medical life saving interventions. The British Heart Foundation also hugely promotes how it is important to keep the heart fit and healthy and so of course this fitness event fits perfectly for raising the awareness that you certainly CAN EXERCISE after a heart attack!!

Jo is sharing her story for our Cambridge Clubbathon 2023 and what is so special is that we can all come together to support each other to help raise as much as we possibly can for the British Heart Foundation, and for Jo in memory of her mum, Susan Barlow. We know so many others would also like to participate or donate in memory of dearly loved friends and families.

Jo returned to exercise following her heart attack and she found Clubbercise which she uses as her form of regular exercise to keep her heart fit and healthy. I am a very lucky instructor, that Jo has chosen Clubbercise with Amelia to be her form of regular exercise. Fitness Instructors have the job of supporting, encouraging and motivating people to keep the engine of our bodies, our hearts, being healthy and it’s a known fact that exercise does this hugely.

Sadly heart attacks account for over 75'000 deaths in the UK every year - that may well be more now since the pandemic. With this statistic many people can be affected, or we all know someone, a friend, a member of the family that maybe has suffered a heart attack or has sadly passed away. It is something that affects everyone and many people’s lives!

So if you would like to donate and support us and the British Heart Foundation UK we would be so appreciative. A huge amount of love from many hearts to be shared at this years Clubbathon event. Thank you for all your support.
