Story
My husband, Rob, and I have signed up to walk around the Isle of Wight (IOW) over 2 days at the IOW Ultra Challenge. That’s 66 miles or 106km in total and a breathtaking, undulating coastline! We are both fairly fit and have enjoyed many walking holidays and activities over the years, mostly before children. However, this will be the furthest either of us has ever walked, in particular together, since we have very different walking paces. It will be a challenge in itself for Rob to walk a little slower and for me to keep up, but we are going to make it work and complete this uphill struggle as a team!
We have chosen to undertake this challengein order to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association. In 2022 my step dad Barry was diagnosed with MND and it came as a huge shock to him and the family. MND has no cure and available treatment options only help to relieve some of the symptoms. It has been tough to think of new ways to show our support for Barry and this has fuelled our decision to do something a little crazy to raise some much-needed funds for the charity! Any money we raise willcontribute to the important medical research, care and support that the MND Association provides for people with MND, their families and carers.
Since diagnosis, Barry has taken it all in his stride. He has continued with his usual activities, always with a smile on his face and I can’t imagine how hard this must have been for him to do. Barry is a happy, easy-going, likeable guy and I’ve had the pleasure and honour of him being an important part of my life for the past 26 years. He has stuck by my mum through thick and thin and they are a great and inspirational couple. I know that they will continue to fight this horrible disease together in every way they can!
Barry is loved by lots of friends, family, darts players, golfers, and people he’s worked with throughout his life so we think raising money for the MND Association will truly show him all this love.
We know that times are particularly hard for everyone right now, but we would be ever so grateful for any donation you can make, no matter how big or small. We’ll keep you all updated on how the walk goes and promise to take photos!
Thank you!
Clare and Rob Xx
