Story
I have again managed to persuade Lorraine and Darren to join me in our next charity event, walking Ackling Dyke Roman road. (I was worried that the Antonine Wall walk had broken them 🤣 !) The route runs for 22 miles from Badbury Rings to Old Sarum.
Much of the road exists today as an exceptionally large embankment (agger), sometimes up to 50 ft wide and 6ft high. This is much wider than most Roman roads, and it would have been visible from a great distance. The road would have provided rapid transit for people and soldiers across Cranborne Chase.
Our nominated Charity is Devon Freewheelers, our last challenge raised over £1,400, (for Taunton Opportunities Group) and we very much appreciate any support our friends and clients are able to give.
Devon Freewheelers EVS, also known as Devon Blood Bikes provides a free out of hours courier service to the NHS across Devon.
The service is provided mainly on motorbikes, ridden by over 100 volunteers. The Blood Bikes carry whole blood, blood and other medical samples, medication, emergency medical equipment, tissue samples for cross matching before transplant operations and donor breast milk for premature babies.
The charity receives no funding from the NHS for this service and relies on public donations to be able to continue to operate.
