Story

This year I am racing the Summer Spine race in aid of Guide Dogs and Diabetes looping system Android APS. This race is 268 miles on foot along the Pennine Way from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland starting on the 16th June and finishing when I finish!

Naomi and myself raise Guide Dog puppies (pictured here with Vicky) and we hope to raise some funds for this vital charity. Guide Dogs works for a world where people with sight loss are never left out of life, for a world where being blind or partially sighted is not what defines you. Almost two million people in the UK are living with sight loss. Of those, around 180,000 rarely leave their homes alone and can lead lonely, isolated lives. Guide Dogs change lives.

I have had Type 1 diabetes since 1996. Whatever we raise for Guide Dogs I will match for Android APS (well, up to the target of £500!). Android APS is a computer programme coded by volunteers that helps thousands of diabetics around the world live a more normal life by combining insulin pumps and glucose sensors to act as an artificial pancreas. These volunteer programmers have changed my life and I will always be thankful.

Thank you so much.

PS If you want to follow my progress, this website shows all the athletes on course as 'dots'. I am 118. https://live.opentracking.co.uk/sspine2024/

The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of people with sight loss never leave home alone. We empower visually impaired people to do that and rely on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service.
