More Than Just a Mountain
At the heart of my commitment to climb Mt. Rainier lies a deep connection with nature and a belief that young people should have the opportunity to discover their own paths through the challenges the outdoors provides. That’s why I am a proud supporter of the YMCA of Greater Seattle’s BOLD & GOLD program through the Chris Hooyman Outdoor Education Fund. This vital program offers life-changing outdoor experiences to many young people who might not otherwise have such opportunities.
Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders
In a world where too often leadership falls short, providing our youth with positive examples and meaningful learning experiences is crucial. The BOLD & GOLD program is dedicated to nurturing the young leaders of tomorrow. These programs don’t just take kids outside; they empower them with resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills—traits essential for personal growth and societal betterment.
Our Impact So Far
Thanks to your generous support, we’ve raised over $20,000 toward our goal, but our journey isn’t over. We still need your help to reach our target and continue providing these transformative experiences.
How You Can Help
By supporting this cause, you’re not just helping us meet a financial goal—you’re investing in the future leadership of our community. Whether you contribute $5 or $500, every dollar makes a significant impact.
Thank you for being a part of this important mission. Together, we can make a lasting difference.
About Chris Hooyman
Chris Hooyman, a Seattle native, discovered his passion for the outdoors early on. A skilled climber and guide, he was committed to sharing his love for adventure. Tragically, his life was cut short on Mount McKinley, but his spirit and dedication to outdoor education live on through the fund established in his memory.
The Chris Hooyman Outdoor Education Fund
The fund supports BOLD & GOLD, a program perfectly aligned with Chris’s values, focusing on empowering young people through outdoor experiences and leadership challenges.
BOLD & GOLD was conceived by educators Jane Bierman-Siebel and Annie Lareau in 1996, who led wilderness trips to foster courage and leadership among young women. The program for young men, started in 2006 by Craig McKibben, focused on using the wilderness to develop emotional awareness and leadership skills. Merging under the YMCA umbrella in 2011, these programs have expanded nationally, now operating in over 30 locations across the United States.
