Story
4 months ago, my husband, Chris, laughed when I suggested I might attempt a 100 mile bike ride. Obviously this was like a red rag to a bull, so here I am with one month to go till the London Ride 100, desperately hoping I can prove him wrong (but still not 100% sure I've got 100miles in me!!) For context, 100 miles is roughly equivalent to cycling from London to Birmingham.... so please sponsor me generously to give me the motivation to get me through it!
So, why am I doing this? In October 2020, during the first lockdown we were devastated to receive my Mums diagnosis - Motor Neurone Disease. A quick Google did nothing to allay our fears that this was anything other than the worst possible news. My previously fit and active Mum had already started to deteriorate at that point and we knew then that we had a few years left with her at most. Mum battled the odds, and remained stoic until the end, despite the gradual but persistent decline in her health, mobility and breathing. In some ways we were lucky, she never lost her speech as many do. Mum died in September 2023. We miss her like mad, so this bike ride is an effort to do something positive in her memory & raise a lump of cash for The MND Association in the process. It feels fitting that its a bike ride - although never exactly a road biker, Mum always loved her bike!
MND is a is a rare but terminal neurodegenerative disorder that leads to the the progressive loss of both upper and lower motor neurons that normally control voluntary muscle contraction. Scientists are tantilisingly close to finding a cure for MND, so give what you can to help cure this horrible disease.
(p.s. In the end Chris is training me and doing the Ride 100 with me - I definitely wouldnt be attempting this without him)
