Story
I have been watching and supporting at the St Albans Half Marathon for many years and last year I decided that I didn't want to just watch, I wanted to train and run it myself and raise some money for two special charities at the same time ! I have worked really hard to be ready for 13.1 miles on 11th June 2023.
The two local charities I am supporting are very important to me.
On this page you can donate to DS achieve. If you would like to donate to Special Olympics St.Albans please let us know because they are not on Just Giving.
DS Achieve - a local charity that helps children and young people with Down Syndrome achieve their potential by working with them, their families and professionals.
I have been working as a Support Worker for DS Achieve's weekly YOUNG ACHIEVERS groups for almost a year now, so I know what a difference they are making for children with Down Syndrome and their parents in our area.
Special Olympics St Albans (SOSA)
I have been going to netball and athletics with SOSA since I was about 12 years old. I love it and have made lots of friends there, and I have been to matches and races all around the country. I even represented SOSA at the World Games in Sheffield a few years ago. It has made a real difference to my life. The volunteers have been helping me to train for the half marathon.
SOSA aims to support athletes with intellectual disabilities and caters for all levels and abilities - from those who have done no sport before to those who want to compete up to national and international level. They support athletes to build self confidence, self esteem and skills. They have weekly sessions in Athletics, Boccia, Swimming and Netball - as well as joining up with other Special Olympics clubs to do more sports like golf, judo, gymnastics and dance. This year there are 5 SOSA athletes who have been selected to represent Special Olympics GB in the World Games in Berlin, which is very exciting.
