Story
This August, together with my partner Chris, I’m taking on the challenge of cycling 186 miles from London to Paris to raise money for the brilliant WMUK, the only UK charity for Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinaemia (WM). As those of you who know me well will know, I am a keen cyclist, though this mammoth trek will be an almighty challenge.
So what are we fundraising for? WM is a rare type of blood cancer, and although it is slow-growing, at the moment, there is no cure. Only around 4,000 people in the UK are living with WM.
Last August, my dad, Andy Green was diagnosed with WM. Although it’s a slow-growing cancer that often requires years of monitoring before requiring treatment, Dad was told that he needed to start pretty much as soon as he received his diagnosis. There followed almost five months of a gruelling chemo regimen which he finished on Christmas Eve, 2023.
All through this journey, myself and my family have found WMUK to be an invaluable source of knowledge and support. That is why I’m taking on this challenge to help raise awareness of WM, but even more importantly, to raise money to support WMUK’s inspiring work which helps this small but unique community of people and families living with WM. And because it’s a small charity, your donation really will make a difference!
Dad is now in partial remission, which means the treatment has cleared some of the cancer, which is brilliant news. Mum regularly sends me photos of him being put to work, from cleaning windows at the top of a ladder to hoovering the whole house! That said, WM is a condition which you live with forever, and often requires multiple treatments, which makes the work of WMUK and its community support all the more important.
We'll be starting my training from April onwards for what I know will be a mentally and physically challenging three days cycling, but all for a brilliant cause.
I’d be so hugely grateful for anything you can donate, no matter how small, to support WMUK.
Thank you!
