Story
Epilepsy can be one of the most frightening and isolating conditions a young person can face. Reuben was diagnosed when he was just 2 years old. He started having absences, and these quickly progressed to tonic colonic seizures where he fell to the ground shaking. Initially the medication helped and he was even seizure free for a while but unfortunately this didn’t last, and he continues to have seizures despite now being on his fifth different medication.
The seizures have changed over time - they now mainly occur at night and in the evening - but can and have happened at any time; crossing the road, at school, in a swimming pool… The seizures are frightening and disorientating, giving him a bad headache and making him feel very tired for days afterwards. Their unpredictability makes it difficult physically and mentally especially as he gets older and wants more freedom, and impacts the whole family.
Over the past year Reuben has been very lucky to gain support from Young Epilepsy. Through online one-to-one and group sessions he’s been able to talk about his condition and feelings, and for the first time meet other young people in the same situation as him.
Together this April we will be raising money for this fantastic charity. I will be joining thousands of runners completing 26.2 miles as part of the London Marathon and Reuben will be walking 26.2 miles. Please help us to support this cause and make a huge difference to the lives of other young people with this horrible condition.
Your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate £5 or £50. Every little bit helps. Thank you for your support.
