Story
In April 2025 I will be joining a wonderful team at the Events Room to undertake a challenge and trip of a lifetime, trekking to Everest Base Camp. I will be doing this to support two wonderful charities very close to my heart: Breast Cancer Now and The Matt Ratana Rugby Foundation. My goal is to raise £2,000 between them.
Matt Ratana Rugby Foundation
The Matt Ratana Rugby Foundation was set up as a private fund within the Atlas Foundation in response to the tragic death of police sergeant and rugby coach, Matt Ratana and promotes community engagement and inclusivity through rugby. Sergeant Matt Ratana was a custody sergeant based in South East London and was a dedicated rugby coach in his spare time. Matt was tragically shot by a detainee in Croydon custody suite in 2020 and his death had a devastating impact on his family, policing and on the communities he supported through his passion for rugby. Matt was the first custody sergeant that I ever dealt with in my role as a volunteer police officer and I am truly grateful for the kindness and support he showed me – his good humour and easy manner endeared him to everyone he dealt with and his passion to encourage and support young people to improve his local community through rugby was admirable. All funds raised support the design and delivery of school and community rugby initiatives, both nationally and internationally. Breast Cancer Now
Every year around 55,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and diagnoses amongst younger women in particular is increasing. This a devastating disease and affects not only those diagnosed, but their family and friends too and sadly I am sure we all know someone whose life has been affected by breast cancer. I am no different: my cousin Marion was diagnosed in her mid-thirties and due to a lack of understanding of this disease in younger women, that diagnosis came far later than it should have and Marion passed away a short time later, leaving behind a young baby and toddler with no mother. Breast Cancer Now advocates for better research and more awareness of how breast cancer can affect women of all ages and provides absolutely integral support to women and their families confronted by the life changing diagnosis that is breast cancer.
