Story
Creating fun and joyful memories has been even more important for us as a family this year as we have navigated my Mum's cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatments. My last fun run was 2017, when the kids were aged 3 & 1. This time round, Chloe and Toby are joining me as we take part in Rainbow Run 2024, with Mum (Grandma) cheering us on. We can't wait!
We are raising money for East & North Hertfordshire Hospitals' Charity.
The charity supports 4 local hospitals; Lister Hospital in Stevenage, QEII in Welwyn Garden City, Hertford County Hospital & Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood.
For us as a family, these hospitals have:
- supported me through both pregnancies and welcomed my children into the world; Toby especially creating quite the stir with many staff trying to guess his birth weight!
- cared for my Mum recently following her cancer related surgery and previously when she was seriously ill with cellulitis
- been the place to turn to when any of us have been seriously unwell or hurt.
They do vital work to go above and beyond the remit of the NHS.
£20 could fund activity packs for our dementia patients
£50 could fund outdoor toys for our children's ward
£100 could fund a visit from our therapy ponies
They also have the Butterfly Volunteer Service, which a friend is part of, who are specially-trained to support dying patients, their families and friends at the end of their life.
Without the Butterfly volunteers, up to 20 patients were dying alone at the Lister Hospital each month and others were alone when waiting for relatives to arrive.
The Butterfly volunteers will be there with patients at the end of their life if their loved ones can't be there and they will also support their families at that difficult time.
In order to keep this vital service running over £45,000 each year needs to be raised.
