Story
Roughly 2,500 people are diagnosed with a spinal cord injury every year in the UK. These injuries can have a profound and in many cases permanent impact on a person's life, affecting their physical, sensory, financial and emotional wellbeing.
To support newly injured people, Neurokinex initiated the "Step Up" Scheme, which brings a life-changing opportunity of six free specialist rehab sessions to adults and children. An absolute lifeline which enables people to access the world-class Neurokinex facilities and expertise, the Scheme costs the Neurokinex Charitable Trust £420 per person to fulfil and it relies on funding for its survival. To help bolster funding for the "Step Up" Scheme, the Neurokinex Community will aim to row 250,000 metres - 100 metres for each person diagnosed with a Spinal Cord Injury every year - in The Great Neurokinex Row Challenge. People will row on an adapted Concept 2 rower throughout the 7-day challenge beginning on the 4th September. The challenge aims to raise £25,000 to help fund Neurokinex's essential services. Every meter our participants cover, and every pound you donate, will bring a newly injured person closer to their chance for life-changing rehabilitation.
I will be joining Neurokinex and stepping up to raise vital funds to secure the scheme for another year by rowing as far as I can on Tuesday 5th September at my local Gatwick Neurokinex centre. Like myself, many of those taking part benefitted from the "Step Up" Scheme themselves and know first-hand the physical and psychological value of this early intervention following a Spinal Cord Injury. Collectively, we are now giving back to enable others to have the same opportunity.
