Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page in memory of Casey.

Sadly we lost Casey on April 12th. In the end the cancer won the battle but he was our little warrior who fought it for 2.5 years. after we almost lost him in 2021.

He lost a lot of weight and was very tired, but we were with him to say goodbye. This past weekend has been terribly painful as the flat just doesn't feel the same. Everything reminds us of him, especially as we've intentionally spent so much time with him over the past year as we saw how his health declined.

We adopted Casey together with his brother Dusty at age 2 in 2010 after their original cat-mom could no longer take care of them. I remember going in to adopt one cat (while @mseckington was away from home!) and coming back with two. I never had a cat before and almost lost Dusty in the flat in the first week.

They recently turned 16 (about 80 in human years), so they were both having a great life but getting on with their age. That said, I don't want to remember Casey like he was in this last year. Instead I want to remember him like he was in his better days, so let me tell you about him.

Casey was the smartest, silliest, kindest, compassionate, and naughtiest cat I've ever met. He imprinted on Mel and followed her wherever she went. He even copied the huffs she makes when she gets annoyed, letting us know when he was as well!

He liked to chew on plastic, so we got him to chew on Ben & Jerry's ice cream wrappers instead of hairbands or cables. He liked to chase his tail in the bath tub, and he liked to clean his brother's ears when he felt it was time.

In the last year, he'd gotten a lot thinner and slower yet somehow even cuter and clingier. He would sit on his bench in the kitchen, drinking water from a small glass as I cooked. He'd follow Mel around the house, looking up at her as she walked, always seeking more affection.

Casey will be terribly missed, and it will take a while for us all to feel better again. So much of our routines were based on taking care of his cancer, which is something I would not wish on anyone. I am looking to tell his cancer story some other time in the coming weeks, but in the mean time please make a donation to the @rumba_foundation in Casey's name.
