Story
My grandparents, Brenda and Keith Mottershead, moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, in the 80’s due to a job transfer, and witnessed first-hand the divisions and desperate problems in neighbouring villages so many faced due to a lack of clean water provision for communities.
Brenda was shocked and felt she must do something and when she returned to Wilmslow, in Cheshire, set about founding a charity. This summer Wilmslow Wells for Africa celebrates its 40th anniversary!
It is a direct action, volunteer-run charity, working through trusted contacts in Britain and Africa. It provides clean water, hygiene and sanitation in drought-stricken areas of Africa. Over 98% of everything raised goes directly to water projects, at the time of writing the charity has brought clean water to more than 350 villages.
Attending the charity's anniversary event was really special for me- to read about the ambitious and extensive projects and meet the incredible people continuing the aid work my Granny started. I felt inspired to raise funds.
...And so from 1st August, I will walk, cycle or run 5k for 40 consecutive days.
My Mum, Catherine Bryan, is joining in too and we will walk/cycle/run a combined total of 400km in 40 days.
