Story
The unfortunate reality of facing only a precious few months, weeks or days of time remaining, for an individual and for their loved ones, can be devastating, with many unknowns and emotions you were not prepared for. Palliative care specialists and hospice units can bring guidance, comfort and emotional support, during end of life care. It is very close to our hearts that there is ongoing funding for such services. At what can be a lonely and challenging time, there is help that a person didn’t even know they would need.
Marie Curie is a UK wide charity providing end of life care and support. Whatever the illness, wherever you are, we’re with you to the end. They bring 75 years of experience and leading research to the care we give you at home, in our hospices and over the phone. Pushing for a better end of life for all by campaigning and sharing research to change the system.
THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE ...put simply, a challenge to climb the highest mountain in Scotland, England and Wales.
In reality, a total walking distance of over 23 miles, with the total ascent of 3064 metres (10,052ft). Throw into the mix 462 miles of driving and a British summer, oh...and a 24 hour time limit!
We are aiming to achieve this feat on the weekend of 14th June and it'll go a little something like this:-
Ben Nevis - the UK's highest mountain. 10.5 miles up and down and 1,352 metres of ascent. We will set off at 5pm, triggering our 24 hour timer, aiming to be back down in 5 hours before dark.
Our first drive is then 5.5 hours to Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England at 978m. Here, we have 6 miles up and down. All being well, we will start climbing through sunrise from 3.30/4am for 4 hours, all going to plan.
Then we set off to the land of the Dragon to climb Snowdon - the tallest mountain in Wales at 1,085m tall. Just the 4.5 hour drive this time and a prayer that the traffic is kind to give us as much time as possible to complete the 7 miles on foot in order to be back at the bottom for 5pm on Saturday 15th June.
This is a challenge for the most serious of hill walkers, of which we are not two! However, we both wanted to a challenge which would push our physical and mental fitness to the max in order to raise money for a wonderful cause.
