Open Arms East Devon is a friendly peer support group that helps adults experiencing mental health difficulties. The group was established in 2017 when Mind organisation closed its doors in Honiton and Exeter, Garry and his board of trustees came together to start up Open Arms and help the people of the wider East Devon community a safe place for people to go and get help each other. The group meets twice a week in Honiton and offers a range of activities including arts and crafts, games, IT guidance and cooking. We arrange trips out and have access to a woodland area where we do gardeningand get close to nature. Members may be experiencing issues such as anxiety, depression or loneliness and can join in as many activities as they are happy with, or just drop in for a cup of tea in a chat. They are assured of a warm welcome by people who understand. Everything we offer at Open Arms is free and anyone is welcome. We are now offering a Counselling service from a qualified counsellor at a reduced cost for people who need help now without being on waiting lists. We have been working with other agencies and mental health teams around East Devon and often get referrals from GPs, Mental health teams, Homeless groups and Jobcentre plus. Open Arms East Devon changes people’s lives - people grow in confidence and enjoy meeting with others. Some say that they are doing things they have not done in years and that the group is their safe place. A registered charity, the group has been running for six years and is funded by donations and applying for grants. It is run on a purely voluntary basis by Garry Wakeham, who has himself experienced mental health challenges. He founded the group when the facility that he relied upon for support was closed and has been helping others ever since.
The group meets at the CUB building, School Lane HonitonEX14 1QW.
Sessions run from 12.00 pm to 4.00 pm on Tuesdays and 10.30 am to 4.00 pm on Fridays
