Story

Nae right in the Heid….

You probably can’t say that anymore, but my eldest recently did to me!

I suppose when you mean it as doing something silly…like? Well the list is long & if you are reading this you probably have an example of me that you could share (I’m not sure I’d appreciate it, but Scottish dark humour is therapy).

Why do I bring this up, well in my case it turns out it’s accurate!

2 & half years ago (August 21) I received the diagnosis of Early Onset Parkinson’s. At the time, I didn’t honestly understand what Parkinson’s was or is. So, what is it? Well, medically it is a progressive degenerative Neurological disease (Parky’s apparently don’t like the disease bit…). Curable? Not at the moment however that is the hope for the future, and another reason for this post.

Each of us Parky’s is on their own journey with “Patient lead care” and so far mine is okay. A bit shaky, but smoothed out and kept on track by my family, friends & the Parky support network we have amassed over the last 2.5 years, to whom I need to say a BIG thank you to for all the help.

For TEAM ROEMMELE it means trying lots of things, some which stick & some we learn are not for us. Some things take a big longer…a bit like this post, I am slowing getting to the point!

It is definitely a “Journey” and like a lot of things there are people out there who are just awesome & doing great things to slow down, try & stop & maybe reverse the sypmtons of Parkinson’s 🤞.

So why this post, well I’m 50 this year & over Christmas TEAM ROEMMELE asked “what are you going to do to celebrate it?” I did not have anything on my mind to do, however I did have a resolution to lose a bit of weight. So never one to let sleeping dogs lie, my ever enduring wife (AKA Commander & Chief of TEAM ROEMMELE) did some research & as if by magic (feels like fate) she has found a challenge tied to supporting Cure Parkinson’s that happens on my birthday & during my birthday week. It also involves me getting fitter/losing some weight & hopefully raise some money to help a charity that are focused on slowing down symptom progression & hopefully one day curing Parkinson’s!

On my 50th birthday, I’ll be joining a team of cyclists (Including my eldest son, who is keeping an eye on me) to cycle 200 miles (From Edinburgh to Iona) for Cure Parkinson’s. I’ve never cycled that far before, so training has started.

Please help me get there by supporting and Sponsoring TEAM ROEMMELE (instead of a 50th Pint…)

At the very least hopefully you enjoyed reading this, or maybe you are just thinking… “He’s not right in the head!”

This September, I will be joining 19 riders to take on The Celtic Challenge - a 200 mile cycle from Edinburgh to the Isle of Iona.

Cure Parkinson's is no stranger to a challenge. Driven to cure, this agile charity funds cutting edge Parkinson's research and unites the worlds leading experts under one cause. Cure Parkinson's can only continue to have this impact with the support from people like me and you.

By donating to my page, you will help to fund Cure Parkinson's research with potential to slow, stop or reverse Parkinson's. Thank you.
