A pilgrim hike of 325 km to Santiago de Compostella following the challenging Camino de Norte, which I aim to complete in 10 days finding pilgrim hostels along the way.
Your support will make a life-changing Marlborough education possible for motivated and talented young people from disadvantaged families, and will have a transformative impact upon all our pupils, our school and wider society.

Story

I am walking the Camino de Santiago which is a pilgrim route in Spain. There are many different trails and I will be attempting 325 km of the Norte, a challenging route which follows Spain's Northern coastline.

I am giving myself ten days to complete the task. I am taking a backpack with all of my supplies and aim to walk 30km+ per day, finding accommodation along the way in pilgrim hostels and monasteries.

On the camino you meet people of all backgrounds, cultures, ages, nationalities who are motivated to attempt the long and tiring journey. For some it’s about the physical challenge and others look for spiritual enlightenment. Whatever the goal, the camino is a transformative experience. Attending Marlborough is also transformative experience in many ways. It’s not only a great eduction.

Walking the camino seems a fitting way to raise money for Marlborough's bursary fund which will give talented and motivated students a life enhancing opportunity.  And the Collage will benefit by having a wider diversity of students. It will become more inclusive, like the camino.

I feel that young people deserve not to be limited by their circumstances and should be able to achieve as much as they can in life. I want to raise money to try and give less fortunate people the opportunity they deserve to go to a good school like Marlborough which will set them up well in life and give them many experiences that will help them develop as a person. I hope that you will sponsor me and through my efforts I can contribute to the Marlborough Difference campaign.

For anyone not familiar with the Camino de Santiago:

Santiago de Compostela was one of the three major destinations for Catholic pilgrimage  in the middle ages along with Rome and Jerusalem. Pilgrims from all over the Christian world for hundreds of years made dangerous journeys to  these sites to visit holy relics. The Cathedral of Santiago houses relics of St James one of the 12 apostles who was beheaded by Herod Agrippa in AD44. Legend says his body was smuggled to the coast where it was put in a stone boat which was guided by angels to Padron on the Spanish coast, before being buried in modern day Santiago. Eight centuries passed before a hermit’s vision of a star over the burial ground revealed the saint’s bones. Soon after St James was said to appear on a white horse to lead the beleaguered Asturians into battle agains the Moorish army. The Austrians won and got to keep their lands and the cult of St James aka Santiago grew. At it’s peak in the middle ages hundreds of thousands of pilgrims made the journey to Santiago de Compostella.  There is no single route, but popular routes converge in Spain with the Camino Francés being the most well known, but there is evidence of the Northern coastal route from the 8th and 9th centuries
