Story
It has been my honour and privilege to be the University of London Air Squadron (ULAS) Liaison Officer to St Clement Dane's Church.
St Clement Dane's has provided the squadron's students with unforgettable once in a life time ceremonial events.
I was fortunate enough to be involved with the 105th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force service at St Clement Dane's, a service that I will never forget.
Part of my role is to not only organise and liaise ULAS's attendance at the ceremonial events held at the church, I also have the key responsibility to support the church within its charitable causes.
To show my gratitude for what the St Clement Dane's has done for the squadron and the wider RAF; I am going to cycle the distance between St Clement Dane's and RAF Wittering (ULAS's Flying HQ) everyday for a week.
This is to raise funds for the 1941 Steeple Appeal that aims to fund the much needed repairs and restoration to the Church's steeple that is at risk of collapse.
The challenge is to cycle the 125km distance everyday from my on a static bike for a week (21/08/23 - 27/08/23) .
Please donate to this worthy cause,
Cameron Young.
St Clement Dane's Church's statement about the 1941 Appeal -
Built in 1682 by Sir Christopher Wren, St Clement Danes Church was rebuilt by the Royal Air Force after being all but destroyed during the Blitz in WWII.
Now the vibrant central Church of the RAF, synonymous with the children's nursery rhyme "Oranges & Lemons" which the bells play to this day on the hour.
The church is also a national memorial of Remembrance, housing 11 hand written Books of Remembrance recording the names of all those who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice serving our country.
We need your help to fund emergency work to the 1719 James Gibbs Gothic Steeple, which has deteriorated over the winter and is now at risk of collapse.
We need a total of £20,000 to pay for emergency work to encase the steeple in stainless steel netting to ensure no masonry fall to the ground and causes risk to life.
A donation of £10.30 will pay for an inch of the emergency work on the steeple.
A donation of £1030 will pay for an inch of the restoration work on the steeple.
