Story
In early 2020 Cameron Millar was diagnosed with a non-smoking lung cancer called ALK+ lung cancer at stage IV. Throughout his time as a fighter against cancer, Cameron actively advocated amongst cancer charities, one of which being The Ruth Strauss Foundation, who in collaboration with ALK+ UK and EGFR+ UK launched the 'See Through the Symptoms' campaign to drive GP awareness of non-smoking lung cancers. Cameron was photographed by the British photographer, Rankin, for this campaign. His photo is displayed on The Ruth Strauss Foundation website.
Cameron very sadly passed away on the 5th of February 2024, after a strong willed battle. His family and friends are now fundraising for The Ruth Strauss Foundation in his name to continue his legacy, as well as aiming to support families going through similar situations and raise awareness for the fight against non-smoking lung cancers.
‘Due to the connection between our family and The Ruth Strauss Foundation, we found it fitting to fundraise for this charity. It certainly hasn’t been easy since Dad’s passing, however I think the way he prepared us for when he would go, has made it a lot easier. That is what The Ruth Strauss Foundation is about, making death easier for families and children losing a parent.’ - Jay Millar
The Ruth Strauss Foundation aims to ensure that every family with a child facing the death of a parent from cancer is offered the professional emotional support they need to prepare the family for the future. The foundation also strives to facilitate collaboration and influence research in the fight against non-smoking lung cancers (NSLCs), so that together we can find the causes sooner and improve outcomes.
The event that we are fundraising for is the Etape Caledonian on May the 12th. This is a 85 mile bike race in Scotland. Cameron himself completed the race 10 times with many friends along the way. This year there will be ten of Cameron's family and friends: Archie, Jay, Chris, Ben, John, Iain, Ian, Connor, Brodie and Calum, who finished all 10 races with Cameron.
All donations go to an amazing cause and are greatly appreciated!
