Story

We are fundraising to help reduce the incidence of obstetric fistula and its risk factors in Kenya through a Quality Improvement (QI) initiative focused on education, prevention, and management of Obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI).

Obstetric fistula remains a significant issue globally, with the highest burden in low-resource settings, particularly in Sub- Saharan Africa. The WHO estimates that over two million women live with untreated obstetric fistula globally, with approximately 50,000–100,000 new cases annually. In Kenya, the prevalence of obstetric fistula is estimated to be 1 per

1,000 women of reproductive age, though rates vary widely by region. (WHO, 2023; FIGO, 2022).

Conditions such as vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) and rectovaginal fistula (RVF) often result from obstructed labour, poorly managed obstetric care, and untreated severe perineal trauma, including Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries (OASI). OASI is classified as third- and fourth-degree perineal tears and can lead to lifelong complications such as faecal and urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, perineal pain, fistula formation, but also social stigma and exclusion.

Time to be proactive not reactive in perineal trauma.

To help our cause, we are offering free courses in the field of Urogynecology aimed at equipping healthcare professionals with the knowledge they need to make a difference. However, we cannot do this alone. We are seeking your support to help us reach our fundraising target.

Your generous donations will directly contribute to our efforts in education and prevention initiatives that can change lives for countless women suffering from these conditions. Together, we can create a future where every woman has access to quality healthcare and the opportunity for a healthy life.

We are fundraising for Cambridge Global Health Partnerships (CGHP) which is a charitable organisation committed to improving healthcare globally. CGHP was born out of the belief that health should not be predetermined by where we live. Since 2007, we have been strengthening healthcare in low/middle-income countries (LMIC) settings through health partnerships.

CGHP functions as a linked charitable programme within Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust (ACT)
