Story
Hey,
Kieron and I are currently gearing up to hike the Coast to Coast walk from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay from the 3rd to the 17th of July in order to raise money for Sue Ryder.
Sue Ryder is an amazing charity who provide compassionate care and support. Our decision to support Sue Ryder was inspired by the compassionate care they provided to Rachel Anne Barlow, the mother of our friend Naomi who recently passed in February. We were deeply moved by the dedicated care provided by Sue Ryder and wanted to honour Rachel by supporting the organisations vital work. We share Naomi's story with the hope that it will inspire others to join us in our mission to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most:
My name is Naomi, and I am a friend of Cam and Kieron. My mum was sadly diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer in October 2022, and passed away in February of this year. Throughout her illness, she and my family were supported by Sue Ryder, and in her last few days she stayed at the Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading. My mum was only 56, and our family and friends have been hit by the terrifying reality that cancer exists, and sometimes cannot be stopped.
Cancer is one of the evils of this world, and it is torture to watch someone you love be taken away so prematurely from you. I became aware that before my Mum’s illness, I had no idea what Sue Ryder actually did. The palliative care and bereavement support they provide was crucial to ensuring my Mum could be as comfortable as possible when her life was coming to an end. Although the pain of my Mum’s passing can never be healed, the comfortable ending my Mum was able to receive at a Sue Ryder Hospice provided myself and my family reassurance that Mum was being cared for thanks to this amazing charity.
If there is anything my Mum’s passing taught me, it is that your whole life can be turned upside down. It is through charities like Sue Ryder that the dark days are a little less darker, and the pain of losing a loved one can reach a peaceful end.
It is safe to say reliance upon Sue Ryder catches you off guard, and the urgent need to donate and give money to this amazing charity is something many only realise when it is too late, and they are benefitting from the incredible work they provide. I hope my story will encourage you to donate, and support my wonderful friends, Cam and Kieron.
We are both really looking forward to taking on this challenge while supporting a great cause as the walk will take us through the stunning landscapes of the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors. We’re going to be camping out for the majority of the journey while carrying all our gear, so it’s definitely going to be a serious physical and mental test for us.
We’re so determined to do it, and we’re aiming to complete the whole journey in just 15 days and we’re hoping that you will support us in getting there. Whether you can chip in £1 or £20, every donation really helps, and it is going to make a huge difference to those who are in need of Sue Ryder’s services.
Where possible, we’ll be sharing our journey on social media, so you can keep up with our progress and see how your donation is making an impact, our Instagram handles are cam.mackellar and kierongibson5.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, we hope you join us in our journey and supporting Sue Ryder, and we truly appreciate any support you can give.
Much love,
Kieron and Cam.
