Story
Dementia is a truly horrific illness of the modern age that is sadly very close to home for the vast majority of us. I don't think there's anyone really in this country that hasn't seen the devastating effects of it first hand with most of us having at least one elderly relative suffering from it...myself included. It robs us of years of happiness and joyous memories with those we love as we watch every part of their personality being stripped away.
However it's not all doom and gloom, in recent years there's emerged a whole swath of brilliant charities that are fighting this illness. Either by providing facilities of care, training, support for relatives and also importantly research into better treatments for those afflicted and even work towards potential cures!!
In my opinion one of the best is Alzheimer's Society! This is a small statement from the society themselves: "Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice."

On a last note there has also been some amazing scientific breakthroughs recently in both understanding how this illness both develops and effects the brain and work towards better treatment and an actual cure. I believe if we keep up the funding for groups like Alzheimer's Society within the next 20 years we could live in a world free from its devastating effects!!
