Story
I have lived close to the SW Coast Path for most of my life and since getting my Weimaraner Morva in 2020 rarely does longer than a day or so go by that I am not on some of the coast path.
I hope to encourage more people to get out and enjoy the path with their dogs safely.
I will be completing the entire SW Coastpath canicross, running and hiking with Morva.
We will not be aiming for a FKT as safety with your dog on the coast is one of the messages I hope to promote. I will therefore be picking and choosing suitable days to complete each section so as not to expose Morva to the elements unessessarily as we know the coastpath can be an unforgiving place!
That being said the sections we do will tend to be full days completing a marathon or ultra marathon distance.
There has been a massive increase in footfall on the coastpath since the lockdowns in 2020 encouraged more people to get outside and as a result these areas require maintenance to keep them safe for all to enjoy.
There has also unfortuantly been a fair few instances of dogs going over cliffs or getting lost and requiring rescue in some cases they were unable to be saved.
I hope to raise money for two charities with this challenge:
South West Coast Path
Cornwall Search Dogs
The South West Coast Path Association are the Charity which champions the UK's best-loved National Trail, stretching over 630 miles of beautiful, dramatic coastline, stretching over Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and Dorset.
By supporting my campaign, you'll be helping the Association to protect and preserve this amazing asset, helping to make it resilient in the face of a changing world, and to enhance it so that it's an even more accessible, wonderful place to be. With a cost of around £1400 per year for each mile, every penny really does count, so please give generously!
The object of Cornwall Search Dogs (Searching for lost People and Dogs) is:
1. The preservation and protection of health and the saving of lives by providing a dedicated and trained emergency search service consisting of appropriately trained dogs and volunteer handlers to assist and support the emergency services and voluntary rescue services in the search and rescue of missing persons in Cornwall.
2. ‘For the benefit of the public to relieve the unnecessary suffering of animals by the searching for lost dogs’.
