Story
As some of you will know, Dave Harris and I walk for miles through the Dorset countryside, usually to reach a pub! To take this to the next level, over the next few months we will be walking to a pub in each of the four counties that border Dorset. We will finish by walking to the pub closest to my house in Dorchester.
50,000 people are currently living with dementia in the 5 counties we will walk through and to. Worldwide in 2023 there was 1 new person diagnosed every 3.2 seconds. That's 10 million new cases every year. That's 27,000 per day!
Our total miles will be 135 for the 5 walks = 270,000 steps. This means that while we are on our challenge walks, one person is diagnosed with dementia worldwide every time we have walked just 10 steps!
Currently, Dorchester Arts run weekly Art for Memory classes designed for people experiencing the early stages of memory loss in Sherborne. Run by an experienced tutor alongside a fantastic support worker, each week new creative skills are enjoyed including different methods of printmaking, watercolour painting, clay work and collage. Plus, there is always time for tea, coffee, biscuits and a jolly good chat!
We would like to raise enough money to enable Dorchester Arts to start up a similar class in Dorchester. It would be great if you could spare a few pounds to spur Dave and I on, and support this fantastic cause.
We'll be posting regular updates here as we reach each county.
Many thanks
Bruce and Dave
