The Lilongwe Institute of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery (LION) is an autonomous not-for-profit institution in Malawi where BSSH and BAHT aim to work with and train local surgeons, trainees and therapists to deliver and educate in patient care.

Story

Our mission is to solve the issues that affect our clients within the orthopaedic and spine industry, by building and strengthening their businesses, highlighting pivotal strategic opportunities from inception to exit and driving global sales through our consulting services.

In 2022 we set ourselves the exciting challenge of raising £5,000 for good causes that supported people locally, nationally and in low-income countries worldwide.

It was amazing to smash that target raising £8,500 for three fantastic organisations and now we are determined to go further, higher and faster than ever before!

Over the course of 2023 we’re undertaking a host of fundraising activities in aid of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) and the Lilongwe Institute of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery (LION) in Malawi.

A new, purpose-built healthcare facility for treating injured Malawi patients free of charge, LION is attached to the Kamuzu Central Hospital, in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi, which serves a catchment population of several million people.

For five years, the BSSH and the British Association of Hand Therapists (BAHT) will assist LION in the delivery of treatment for elective and traumatic conditions of the hand.

BSSH and BAHT volunteers will work in the LION Hand Unit throughout this period, working with local staff in the running of specialist hand clinics and regular hand trauma and elective lists, while promoting sustainability through education and training.

All the money we raise will go to the BSSH to support the LION project.

Our Good Cause

The BSSH promotes and directs the development of hand surgery in the UK, coordinating education, study and research and disseminating knowledge among members of the medical and allied health profession. The BSSH has been supporting members performing voluntary work overseas in low to middle income countries since 2010 and currently has missions in ten countries including Malawi.
