Bob Hardy: Celebrating 25 Years of Commitment to the Little Angels Blood Cancer Fund

As the 2025 Ottawa Race Weekend is being fully planned, Bob Hardy, affectionately known as The Walker Runner, reflects on a remarkable journey of perseverance, resilience, and commitment to raising awareness and funds in support of The Ottawa Hospital, for the Little Angels Blood Cancer Fund. Since joining forces with the Little Angels Blood Cancer Fund in 2000, Bob has passionately supported patients facing blood cancer transplants and treatments by raising funds to cover non-medical costs. In 2000 alone, he raised $25,000 through three unique events, and his fundraising efforts continue today with every Ottawa Race Weekend and more, dedicated to helping those in need.

Bob's journey began after he was diagnosed with leukemia in February 1996, just two months before his brown belt examination in jiu-jitsu. He met Diane at the 1999 bone marrow transplant picnic, where they discussed unique fundraising ideas that would eventually lead to impactful community events. Diane’s inspiring spirit and commitment to the cause played a significant role in Bob’s motivation to get involved and create meaningful initiatives.

Following his bone marrow transplant in June 1997, two months after his final black belt examination, Bob dedicated himself to finding unique fundraising opportunities, beginning with martial arts demonstrations and community events. His first major event, held in August 2000, raised over $8,000 and marked the beginning of a long-standing partnership with the Little Angels.

Through the years, Bob organized numerous events, including Curling for Little Angels and the Angels on Wheels bicycle racing initiative, which saw him complete an impressive 354-km tour from Ottawa to Kingston and back. Bob's efforts have brought together the community and inspired many, including his daughter Leah, who participated in the cycling events alongside him.

In 2013, after a series of health challenges, Bob transitioned from cycling to walker racing, accumulating over 12,000 km and completing a 100-km ultra marathon in 2019. His commitment to the cause has only grown, with annual participation in the Ottawa Race Weekend, raising approximately $2,000 each year for Little Angels.

Bob's journey has been fraught with obstacles, including colon cancer surgery in 2023 and a crash during a race in April 2024. However, his determination remains unwavering. Recently, he received a custom-designed racing walker from Trionic, Sweden, eliminating speed wobbles and allowing him to continue racing at an impressive pace.
