We believe every blind veteran should be able to lead the life they choose. At Blind Veterans UK we’re one, transformational team. We provide rehabilitation, training, practical advice and emotional support. Together we can help rebuild lives.

Story

Blind Veterans UK are an incredible charity helping veterans with rehabilitation, training, practical advice and emotional support after sight loss. Evolve Commercial is pairing up with them to walk 57km in one day across the South Downs to raise money for their wonderful cause.

REME veteran Steve Williams is one such ex-serviceman receiving the help of the organisation - and so he, his son Ben, and members of Ben's employer Evolve Commercial will be taking on the challenge of the South Coast Ultra Challenge in September 2025 in order to raise money for the charity.

The team will be:

Steve Williams - a REME veteran with sight-loss taking on his first major hiking challenge since losing his sight. Practitioner of multiple marshal arts, Backsworder, Cotswold Olympics Shin Kicking Champion 2008.

Ben Williams - Steve's son, a commercial consultant for Evolve, who has done one other ultra walk (the Keswick to Barrow)... more than ten years ago and not much earlier than his last gym visit.

Sam Simpson Jarman - a commercial consultant for Evolve. Who has never completed an ultra walk before, he is really excited at the opportunity and is determined to rise to the challenge for such a deserving cause.

Jo Scott - this will certainly not be Jo's first funraiser! From running to Paris as a team in 4 days, swimming the solent, marathons, peak challenges, skydiving and more, it's save to say she may be both figuratively and literally carrying the team!

The Challenge will be to hike the 57km length course of the South Coast Ultra while dodging cliffs, cowpats, and the temptation of a pub garden or four.

The sighted members of the walk will also be taking it in turns to simulate Steve's sight-loss with special glasses to see how far they can get without their usual vision.

Thank you ever so much for taking an interest in the cause.
