Story
This year, the University of Southampton BioSoc Hockey team are undertaking the Miles for Marrow challenge – a competition between societies from the University of Southampton and clubs from Southampton city, of who can raise the most money, travel the most distance and swab the most people.
We are challenged to complete sponsored exercise (runs, walks, cycles, or any other type) throughout April, and aim to reach (and exceed) 250 miles, for the 25 years that the Anthony Nolan charity has provided life-saving work with stem cell transplants for people with blood cancer/disorders. 1 person is diagnosed with blood cancer every 14 minutes in the UK, and a stem cell transplant may be their last chance of survival. Anthony Nolan matches incredible people willing to donate their stem cells to those requiring a transplant and helps to fund crucial research; however, it costs £40 to add each potential lifesaver to the stem cell register alone. Every penny and pound raised by Southampton Marrow goes towards this cause, so that Anthony Nolan can continue to save 3 lives per day.
Marrow now recruit one in four people who go on to donate stem cells, which means hundreds of lives may further be saved, but the work of Marrow and Nolan needs our and your help!
