This fundraiser is in tribute to Bill Fortheringham, who died aged 85 at The Margaret Kerr Unit, Borders General Hospital, on Tuesday 5 December, 2023.
Bill and his family were tirelessly cared for by the incredible team at The Margaret Kerr Unit, and Bill was keen that a charitable fundraiser was set up so they can continue their crucial work. The centre was founded by charitable donations. Initially they received a generous legacy from Nurse Margaret Kerr, that inspired an appeal to build a specialist palliative care facility in the Borders, which opened in January 2013.
The team also look after patients in their homes, community hospitals and care homes in along with those in the BGH and MKU.
Donations to The Margaret Kerr Unit and Palliative Care fund are used to:
make improvements in the garden
provide artwork throughout the Unit
assist with patient transport costs
provide complimentary therapies
provide free tea and coffee
develop palliative care services throughout the hospital and community
