We’re running for Becca, our friend who was killed by her boyfriend when she was 15.
For so many people, she’s a statistic, a number on a screen, a face on a collage. You might have even seen her story on the news, on Netflix or in cringey and badly reconstructed ITV dramatisations.
But she was a friend, sister and a daughter. She was sarcastic, she was funny, she loved Ribena, Redbull, Britney Spears Midnight Fantasy, we’d jump around in her bedroom signing Paramore and gossiping about boys.
I’ve always wanted to do something to mark her memory, aside from raising a glass twice a year - which doesn’t really seem to cut it anymore. I’ve neverrrr been a runner, it’s painful, boring and I have stubby legs. So I’m dedicating what will definitely be the worst 3 (+) hours of my life, to her.
If she was here she would have me sectioned for even thinking about doing this (I’ve never known anyone then or since to hate sports so much in my life).
But Becca died in pain, afraid and alone. So I’m going to run next to Ronan, my husband, who mourned alongside me 15 years ago, to give women and girls shelter, a safe space, and the awareness to spot manipulation, coercive behaviour and control.
