Beth's fundraiser for Samaritans

London Marathon 2025 · 27 April 2025 · Start fundraising for this event
On the 27th April, I’ll be running the London Marathon in memory of my amazing friend and neighbour, who tragically lost her life to suicide in March this year. She was only 24 and a truly remarkable person whose dedication to helping others was at the heart of everything she did.
She worked as a detective for the Metropolitan Police, dedicating her career to protecting and supporting others in their most vulnerable moments. She was the person her colleagues turned to when they needed advice, encouragement, or a listening ear. Her compassion, strength, and commitment to making the world a safer place touched everyone she met. Yet, in her own moments of struggle, she didn’t feel she could reach out for help herself. This is a heartbreaking reminder of how vital it is to support one another and break the stigma surrounding mental health.
She was so much more than her profession. She was an amazing sister, a doting auntie, a devoted daughter, and an incredible friend. Ellie and I grew up side by side, neighbours since the day she was born. We spent every day chatting over the garden fence, every weekend running back and forth between each other’s houses, and every summer relaxing in the garden or going on holidays to the coast. We were there for each other through the good times and the hard ones, sharing countless happy memories over the years. It breaks my heart that I couldn’t be there for her when she needed me most, and I am forever grateful for the bond we shared and the joy she brought into my life. Her warmth, kindness, and sense of humor brought light to everyone’s lives, and her absence has left an unimaginable void. We will forever mourn her loss and cherish the memories of the vibrant, loving person she was.
To honour her memory and her unwavering dedication to helping others, I am raising funds for Samaritans as I take on the London Marathon. Samaritans work tirelessly to provide support for those struggling with their mental health or feeling overwhelmed. Their 24/7 helpline offers a vital lifeline for those who may feel they have no one to turn to. This feels like an appropriate cause for Ellie’s memory as she dedicated herself to being that lifeline for others.
Every step I take will be in her honor, remembering her compassion, her strength, and the love she brought to everyone around her. I hope to raise awareness about the importance of seeking help, supporting one another, and ensuring that no one has to face their darkest moments alone.
Please join me in supporting Samaritans by donating, sharing this message, or simply keeping my friend’s memory in your thoughts. Together, we can make a difference, offering hope to those who need it most and helping to prevent tragedies like this in the future.
Thank you for helping me honour her memory, celebrate her incredible life, and support a cause that can bring light to those in darkness.
Many people find it hard to speak openly or ask for help, but talking can be life-saving – whether it’s with a colleague, a family member, friend or a helpline like Samaritans. Every 10 seconds, Samaritans volunteers respond to a call for help. Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to listen and support people with whatever they are facing, with no judgement. It’s the public’s kind donations and around 23,000 volunteers that mean Samaritans are always there for anyone struggling to cope. Thank you for your help.
