Story

Wales Air Ambulance Charity is funded by the people of Wales and requires £8 million a year to keep its four helicopters in the sky, serving Wales and saving lives. The charity can be anywhere in Wales within 20 minutes, its doctors and medics fly the A&E deptartment to the patient.

It also runs the Children's Wales Air Ambulance service, transferring vulnerable babies and children to the specialist hospitals across the UK.

In October 2020, a pupil from Islwyn High School was involved in a very serious accident in a rugby match for his club. He sustained a head injury from which he has not fully recovered. 999 was called and WAAS were the first to the scene. They very quickly saw that something was wrong and ensured that he received the correct care. They ensured that he went to the right hospital, rode with him in the ambulance and made sure they the doctors at the hospital had all of the correct information to operate. The pupil was in an induced coma, and in this time doctors discovered an underlying condition involving the blood vessels in his brain.

The family are eternally grateful for the work of WAAS and as a school we want to do out bit to raise funds. Our year 8 pupils will be taking part in a spinathon, taking it in turns to cycle a 20 minute leg in an attempt to cycle 400 miles as a year group - 400 being the number of people under the age of 18 saved by the WAAS on average per year. We are also aiming to raise 400 pounds for the service.

Your donations will help keep this vital service in Wales.

About the charity
